Read the counts, then the bars: green is fine, amber is close, red is over the limit. 3. One emoji counts as one, even a flag or a skin-tone emoji built from several parts. Instagram doesn’t publish how it counts emoji, so keep a few characters spare near a limit. - **Hashtags** are words that start with #. **@mentions** are usernames that start with @. - **Automated DMs** are measured in bytes, not characters. A plain letter is 1 byte, an accented letter 2, and most emoji 4. A DM full of emoji reaches the limit sooner. Writing the DM for a comment-to-DM post? Count it here, then send it to everyone who comments your keyword, on Instagram and Facebook. Reel captions have the same limit. ### Do emoji count as one character? In this counter, yes: each emoji you see counts as one. Many emoji are built from several parts, and Instagram doesn’t publish how it counts them, so leave a little room near a limit. ### How long can an automated Instagram DM be? 1,000 bytes. Instagram’s messaging API counts bytes, not characters. A plain letter is 1 byte and most emoji 4, so a DM full of emoji runs out sooner. ### How long can a Facebook post be? 63,206 characters. The feed cuts long posts short, so put the important line first. ## More free tools - [Instagram Caption Generator — Five captions for your post, by goal and tone, with a comment-keyword ask and a character count.](https://phersa.com/tools/instagram-caption-generator) - [Instagram Hashtag Generator — Up to five hashtags for your post, mixing broad, niche and your own topic tags.](https://phersa.com/tools/instagram-hashtag-generator) - [Instagram Line Break Generator — Keep the empty lines and paragraph spacing in your Instagram captions and bios when you post.](https://phersa.com/tools/instagram-line-break-generator) [See all free tools for AI persona creators →](https://phersa.com/tools) Source: https://phersa.com/tools/instagram-character-counter
