Use it to compare your own posts and find the ones worth making again. ## How to use the Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator 1. Pick Instagram or Facebook. Type your follower count and the post’s views from its insights. 2. Add the likes (or reactions), comments, shares and, on Instagram, saves. Leave out what you don’t have. 3. Read the rate by followers and by views. Compare posts on the same account, not with other accounts. ## How engagement rate is calculated Engagement rate is the interactions on a post, divided by an audience, times 100. The calculator shows it two ways: - **By followers:** (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100. How much of your audience acted on the post. - **By views:** (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ views × 100. How many of the people who saw the post acted on it, followers or not. On Facebook, reactions take the place of likes. Saves are left out, since a Facebook post doesn’t show a save count. ## Followers or views: which rate to use Reels reach people who don’t follow you, so a Reel can get more views than the account has followers. Then the rate by followers looks very high while the rate by views stays normal. For Reels, compare posts by views. The rate by followers fits posts that mostly reach your followers, and tracking an account over time. Whichever you pick, compare posts on one account with the same formula. ## What the extra numbers tell you **Views per follower** shows how far a post travelled beyond your audience. **Comments per 100 views** matters most for comment-to-DM posts, where every comment with your keyword is a person asking for your link. A post that gets comments can send DMs. Ask for a keyword in the post, and set up a DM that sends your link to everyone who comments it. Add up the likes, comments, shares and saves, divide by your followers (or by the post’s views), and multiply by 100. For example, 300 interactions ÷ 12,000 followers × 100 = 2.5%. ### What is a good engagement rate on Instagram? There is no one good number. Rates change with account size, niche and format, and Reels reach many people who don’t follow you. Compare a post with your own recent posts of the same format, using the same rate. The posts well above your own average are the ones to learn from. ### Why is my engagement rate over 100%? Because the post reached far more people than you have followers, which is common for Reels. Use the rate by views to compare those posts. ### Where do I find the numbers for a post? In the post’s insights. Open the post in the Instagram app and tap View insights, or open it in Meta Business Suite. Views, likes, comments, shares and saves are listed there. Followers is the count on your profile. ### Does it work for Facebook posts? Yes. Pick Facebook and it counts reactions, comments and shares. Saves are left out, since a Facebook post doesn’t show a save count. ### Can I check someone else’s engagement rate? Only roughly. You can type the public numbers of any post, but saves show only to the account owner, and an account can hide its like counts. So the result for another account comes out lower than its real rate. ## More free tools - [Comment-to-DM Calculator — From views to keyword comments, DMs, link taps and sales, per post and per month, with your own numbers.](https://phersa.com/tools/comment-to-dm-calculator) - [Hook Generator — Ten opening lines for your next Reel, across 12 hook types, as a spoken line or on-screen text.](https://phersa.com/tools/hook-generator) - [Instagram Caption Generator — Five captions for your post, by goal and tone, with a comment-keyword ask and a character count.](https://phersa.com/tools/instagram-caption-generator) [See all free tools for AI persona creators →](https://phersa.com/tools) Source: https://phersa.com/tools/instagram-engagement-rate-calculator
