Shaded edges: keep text, logos and faces out of them. The buttons are drawn to show what sits there; their exact size changes from phone to phone.

How to use the Instagram Reels Safe Zone Checker

  1. Drop an image, or drop a video and drag the slider to the second you want to check.

  2. Look at the shaded edges. Keep text, logos and faces inside the dashed safe zone.

  3. Switch between Instagram and Facebook, turn the overlay on or off, and download the frame as a PNG.

Reels safe zone in pixels (1080 × 1920)

Meta’s guidance for Reels: keep at least 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text, logos and other key elements. On a 1080 × 1920 frame:

Pixels are rounded to whole numbers. Meta recommends 1440 × 2560 for Reels ads; the same shares apply at any 9:16 size.

What covers each edge

  • Top: the Reels header and the camera button.
  • Right side, lower half: the like, comment, share and more buttons, with their counts.
  • Bottom: the account name and Follow button, the caption, the audio line and the progress bar.

Meta gives the same margins for Reels on Instagram and on Facebook. On phones taller than 9:16, Meta may zoom the video to fill the screen, which crops the edges. Leave a little room inside the safe zone too.

Where to put text and faces

Put the hook text in the upper middle of the safe zone. It reads first there and stays clear of the caption. In a talking-to-camera video, keep the face centered, eyes a little above the middle, so the buttons never cross it.

If your video asks people to comment a keyword, put that word on screen inside the safe zone. Don’t leave it only in the caption: the caption is covered and cut short.

Put your comment keyword on screen, then send your link by DM to each person who comments it, on Instagram and Facebook. See how comment-to-DM works →

Instagram Reels Safe Zone Checker questions

What is the Instagram Reels safe zone?

The middle of the 9:16 frame that the app’s buttons and caption don’t cover. Meta’s guidance is to keep at least 14% of the top, 35% of the bottom and 6% of each side free of text, logos and other key elements.

Where should I put text on a Reel?

Inside the safe zone: below the top 14% of the frame, above the bottom 35%, and 6% in from each side. Put the hook in the upper middle and spoken-word captions just above the bottom zone. Keep the face near the center.

What size should a Reel be?

9:16, such as 1080 × 1920 pixels. Meta recommends 1440 × 2560 for Reels ads. The safe zone shares are the same at any 9:16 size.

Is the Facebook Reels safe zone different?

No. Meta gives the same margins for 9:16 Reels, Stories and Feed on Instagram and Facebook. The buttons look a little different, which the Facebook view shows.

Do the margins change for ads?

Yes, for Reels ads with a disclaimer. Meta says to leave the bottom 40% free instead of 35%. Turn on “Ad with a disclaimer” to see it.
